Shreyas Iyer has emerged as a plausible option for T20 leadership, as BCCI ponders over the uncertainty caused by captain Suryakumar Yadav’s prolonged dip in form.

Media reports have quoted BCCI sources indicating the same, adding that “Iyer last played a T20I in 2023. He has not been part of the current setup. It’s a big call to bring him back and hand him the captaincy straightaway.”

“The focus has shifted towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, which has given selectors breathing space to plan for a T20I leadership transition,” added the source.

As the T20 World Cup for this year is done, the focus has already shifted to the next set of T20I tournaments – including the Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup – both in 2028.

Iyer was made captain of Delhi Daredevils (Now Delhi Capitals) in 2020 when Gautam Gambhir stepped down, and later on for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2024 IPL. He led his team to their third title, and their first in 10 years.

He is currently the captain of Punjab Kings, with Ricky Ponting as coach, same as when he started his captaincy with DC.
