VIJAYAWADA: NTR district collector and special officer of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, Dr G. Lakshmisha, on Thursday urged citizens to stop using single-use plastic covers and switch to eco-friendly cloth bags to protect the environment and public health.
During a city inspection tour, the collector visited Chittinagar and Kothapeta areas and reviewed sanitation measures and enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics. He interacted with residents and traders, highlighting the harmful effects of plastic pollution and stressing the need for public participation in maintaining cleanliness across the city.
While inspecting a shop in the hill area, Dr Lakshmisha noticed single-use plastic covers being sold. He immediately warned shopkeepers that the sale and use of such plastic covers are prohibited and advised them to encourage customers to carry reusable cloth bags while visiting markets and shops.
In a symbolic gesture to spread awareness, the collector personally took away a plastic cover from a customer and handed over a cloth bag free of cost. He said environmental protection is the responsibility of every citizen and that sustainable alternatives such as cloth bags can significantly reduce plastic pollution.
He also appealed to citizens to participate in the Swachh Survekshan feedback process and support Vijayawada’s cleanliness drive.
