Bengaluru: The exercise for formation of new Council of Ministers is deliberated by Congress leaders while the name of MLC Dr Yathindra, the son of acting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is in the reckoning for a cabinet berth, but not for Deputy Chief Minister’s post.

Making Yathindra a cabinet minister was one of the conditions put forward by Siddaramaiah to the Congress High-Command leaders for him to resign from the post. The central leaders reportedly agreed to his demands including a cabinet berth for Yathindra.

Siddaramaiah after tendering his resignation, left for New Delhi on Thursday to meet central Congress party leaders – Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, President of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Mallikarjun Kharge, to thank the leaders for giving him an opportunity to serve as Chief Minister for the second term from May, 2023 to 28th May 2026, the date of his resignation. A day later, the resignation was accepted by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot.

In the meeting with Rahul Gandhi, Siddaramaiah took Dr Yathindra for a face-to-face interaction and to make the road easier for his son’s elevation. A Congress leader “Yathindra making into the cabinet is almost confirmed but would not ascend to the post Deputy Chief Minister.” He questioned the credentials of Yathindra and contributions to the party and stated “Who is he?”

“The move to induct Yathindra into the new cabinet is to please Siddaramaiah. An unhappy Siddaramaiah would pose a threat or hurdle in the smooth functioning of the government under DK Shivakumar,” said a leader close to a cabinet minister. However, High-Command is yet to clear the names of new Council of Ministers.

According to sources, along with Yathindra, Siddaramaiah has lobbied for inclusion of 12 of his close aides as cabinet ministers in the new government. The central leaders reportedly agreed to his demands, prior to Siddaramaiah confirming his exit plan.

Yathindra Siddaramaiah represented Varuna Assembly seat in Mysuru from 2018-23. He sacrificed the seat for his father Siddaramaiah to fight from Varuna seat in 2023 election which he won.

Earlier Siddaramaiah won Varuna seat in 2013 and vacated the seat for Yathindra contest from Varuna in 2018. After Siddaramaiah became Chief Minister for the second term in 2023, Yathindra was made an MLC.

Being an MLC, Yathindra came under fire from his own partymen in 2025, who alleged his interference in administrative matters of some ministers and MLAs.
