Sir Rod Stewart, 81, has given an update on his health after having a coronary stent fitted, as he enjoyed a date night at the theatre with his wife Penny Lancaster

Sir Rod Stewart has given fans an upbeat update on his health after undergoing heart surgery, revealing he has already been back in the swimming pool.

The 81-year-old singer shared the news as he enjoyed a night out with his wife Penny Lancaster, 55, at Sinatra The Musical in London’s Aldwych Theatre on Thursday.

Asked how he was feeling at the gala night, Rod replied: F****** brilliant! I swam 400metres the other day.”

The music legend appeared in high spirits as he left the theatre with Penny, munching on a packet of Maltesers just weeks after having a coronary stent fitted.

Doctors had discovered a blockage linked to an underlying heart issue, prompting the procedure and a period of recovery.

Rod and Penny, who married in 2007, looked loved-up as they headed home following the performance. The singer wore a black suit with a satin shirt and glittering trainers, while Penny opted for a black leather pleated miniskirt.

The outing comes after Rod was forced to cancel a number of concerts following his health problems. He pulled out of several shows in June after suffering from an acute upper respiratory infection, laryngitis and vocal strain.

He later cancelled further dates after undergoing heart surgery, with doctors advising him to stay off the stage for at least four weeks.

Despite the setbacks, Rod is preparing for his upcoming farewell tour, having announced last month that his The Final Encore dates would mark the end of his touring career.

After more than six decades performing around the world, the singer said he felt the time had come to say goodbye to life on the road.

“My dear friends, The time has come to say farewell to life on the road.” He announced his The Final Encore tour which will see him say goodbye to fans in the UK and Europe. The dates will begin on April 23 at Dublin’s 3Arena, and continue to London, Amsterdam and Berlin. He ends the run on July 24 at Hannover’s ZAG Arena.

“After more than six decades, The Final Encore will most definitely be my last,” Rod confirmed.

“I’ve been singing the music I love since I was 19 years old, and I’ve had the privilege of taking it around the world to all of you. It has given me a life beyond anything I could ever have imagined, and I hope I’ve given you some fond memories in return.

“So, may I take this opportunity to thank you for making this extraordinary life possible. I hope you’ll join me so I can thank you the best way I know how… with the music and one hell of a show. See you there.”

His 21-date European tour is due to begin in Dublin on April 23 next year before concluding in Hannover, Germany, on July 24. UK dates are set to include Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and London.

Penny revealed the star had been s uffering from an “underlying heart issue” . She told Vanessa Feltz’s YouTube series At Home With Vanessa: “He’d gone through a couple of incidents where he had an upper respiratory infection and then he was at a concert where there was a very high altitude so it would affect anybody but what we didn’t know was there was an underlying heart issue.

“I mean he’s like one of the fittest guys I know. Forget being fit for 80 odd, he’s fit for someone my age in their fifties you get young kids collapsing with with heart issues unknown to them.

“Fortunately, it was at the right time in the right place and they detected a slight blockage which needed a stent which according to a lot of research, it appears that most people over the age of 65 will often need and require a stent.”

Penny added: “As one gets older, most likely over the age of 65, 75, to get heart disease or to get prostate cancer. And my husband’s had both.

“But when people say they die of natural causes that’s what they mean. They die of heart disease or cancer because that’s naturally…we’re we’re living longer. We’re going to die of something.”

But she revealed that the issue was found in plenty time and Sir Rod was eager to be back performing.
