The couple renewed their marriage vows in an intimate Christian ceremony, celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary. Taking to her Instagram handle, Jyotika shared a wholesome video of their 20-year marriage celebration and titled it ‘The Sequel.’ Now, Suriya’s dad, Sivakumar, spoke fondly about the couple and also revealed his son’s pre-marriage rule.

Recently, during the red carpet of JFW Favourites Awards 2026, Sivakumar revealed that his son, Suriya, waited for four years to marry Jyotika. He also revealed his son’s pre-marriage rule. Sivakumar shared that love does not happen to everyone, but Suriya found his true love in Jyotika. He mentioned that his son, Suriya, was adamant and only wanted to marry Jyotika. Sivakumar said:
“When his mother once asked Suriya why he wasn’t falling in love with someone, he said, ‘One can’t fall in love with just any girl.’ Then he fell in love with a girl (Jyotika) from Bombay (now Mumbai).”
During the same conversation, Sivakumar praised Jyotika and shared that, unlike heroines, Jyotika did not force Suriya to leave his parents. She stayed with them for 18 years. Sivakumar mentioned that he is very happy to see his son and daughter-in-law rooting for each other even after 20 years of marriage. Sivakumar said:
“She stayed here for 18 years. Besides, these days, heroines generally aren’t ready for childbirth after marriage and even push their husbands to leave their parents. But Jyotika got married and had two children while living with us. Seeing an actor couple happily married for 20 years, still carrying the same love that they had when they started out on the journey, is rare. I’m proud to have such a son and daughter-in-law.”
Jyotika and Suriya’s love story
Jyotika and Suriya first crossed paths in 1999 during the filming of Poovellam Kettupar. Back then, the two were struggling actors and were working very hard to establish their foothold in the industry. Jyotika, who hailed from Mumbai, did not know the Tamil language, and it was reportedly Suriya who helped her with the language.
Jyotika tried really hard to learn the language to make her presence in the Tamil film industry, and her dedication towards acting and her perfect dialogue delivery surprised Suriya. The actor was amazed and attracted to Jyotika due to her sincerity towards her work and her humble behaviour with her co-stars. Love blossomed between the couple on the set of Kaakha Kaakha.
According to multiple reports, Jyotika and Suriya’s relationship turned serious during the filming of Kaakha Kaakha. When the film Kaakha Kaakha was released, the duo was believed to have gotten engaged. The engagement was a low-key affair, and it is said that the Karuppu actor had gotten engaged to Jyotika to get some time to convince his parents about their relationship. However, they faced opposition during the early stages of their relationship.
Suriya’s dad, Sivakumar, initially objected to the marriage. Later, they got blessings from their parents and tied the knot on September 11, 2006, at Park Sheraton Hotel in Chennai. For the big day, Jyotika opted for an elegant pink silk saree, while Suriya opted for a white silk mundu with a matching white silk shirt. Earlier this month, in September 2026, the duo renewed their marriage vows in an intimate Christian ceremony.
For the special ceremony, the couple opted for matching white attire, with Jyotika wearing a bridal gown and Suriya dressed in a white tuxedo. The intimate vow renewal ceremony became more special due to the couple’s children’s participation. While Diya served as the maid of honour, Dev walked his mother, Jyotika, down the aisle during their 20th-anniversary vow renewal.
