The victim of the tragic accident, Hassan Kariem, was a father and a passionate educator. Hassan has faced many serious challenges in the past, which also include surviving cancer twice. His family told WXIA that he had survived cancer twice and his last stint with the disease was in 2018.

Not just this, three weeks before his death, Hassan faced a car crash and fire with his 10-year-old daughter. According to one of his friends, Hassan also battled COVID-19.

Hassan was full of life as he loved cooking, watching anime, and spending time with family and friends. He lived in the nearby city of Atlanta and worked for Wesley International Academy, a public charter school. He worked in the school for more than 12 years as an IT manager, technology teacher, and robotics coach. After his passing, the school released a statement, which can be read as:

“Mr. Kariem was deeply loved and respected, and his absence will be felt throughout our school community. His love for Wesley, dedication to our students, and commitment to our school community were evident in everything he did.”

What happened to Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem at Six Flags Over Georgia?

On October 12, 2026, officers working at Six Flags Over Georgia responded to an incident involving a male guest on a roller coaster. The witnesses and preliminary investigators revealed that the victim, identified as Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, was ejected from a ride and struck other people before falling beneath the ride.

The aerial footage from news helicopters showed the Goliath rollercoaster stopped midway, and multiple witnesses have identified the ride as the one involved in the incident. One of the witnesses spoke about the fatal moment and said that he saw a man come out of his seat and then fall into another cart on the ride before falling to the ground. The witness revealed:

“It was just super, super bizarre, traumatic. I mean, it took me a couple of seconds, I feel like, to process what was going on. I can’t believe that I just saw that.”

Not just this, another witness revealed that he was in line for the ride when everyone started “yelling, clearly distressed”. He said he saw the cart come into the hub where others were waiting in line and could see the restraint was unlatched. Another witness described a scene of hysteria, adding that one man was “freaking out, saying someone fell off”.

The Goliath ride opened in 2006, and it has an elevation of 200ft (60m), a 170ft plunge, a 540-degree spiral, and a speed of up to 70mph (112km/h), according to the park website. On its “thrill scale”, Six Flags ranks Goliath at level four out of five. This is not the first incident at Six Flags Over Georgia, and Hassan’s death is counted as the seventh incident involving the amusement park.

Georgia’s Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner is conducting a comprehensive review of the incident.
