Arsenal cruised to a third win in four games in the Champions League first-half strikes from Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres clinched a 2-1 win at Slavia Prague.

The Gunners were facing Slavia a year to the day of their meeting in the league phase last season, when Arsenal ran out easy 3-0 winners.

And Mikel Arteta’s men, riding high after their 1-0 win at Liverpool in the Premier League last Sunday, effectively made the game safe inside the first 45 minutes.

Madueke opened the scoring as he raced onto a Gyokeres pass and produced a clinical finish, before Arsenal’s Swedish striker slotted home a superb second to leave Slavia with a task that was always likely to prove beyond them, though Wiktor Nowak did score a late consolation.

Arsenal broke the deadlock from the first clear-cut chance, Gyokeres doing superbly to hold the ball up and send Madueke through with a hooked pass down the right flank, with the England forward making no mistake as he fired across goal and into the bottom-left corner.

Mikel Merino saw three chances to double the lead go begging, the Spaniard twice denied by Nazar Domchak, but it was he who supplied the assist as Gyokeres gave Arsenal complete command.

Gyokeres and Merino exchanged before the former worked the ball onto his root and bent a superb strike beyond a helpless Domchak.

Oskar Kubiak forced a smart save from David Raya early in the second half as Slavia sought a way back into the contest but, as they did at Anfield last weekend, Arsenal largely succeeded in taking the life out of the game with their defensive solidity.

Gabriel cleared off the line from Mojmír Chytil’s header and by the time Nowak turned home from David Jurasek’s cross it was too little, too late.
