Steve Smith has been ruled out of Australia’s deciding third Test against South Africa in Cape Town after it was confirmed late on Tuesday morning that the batter had not fully recovered from a neck injury.
Smith was set to make his return to Cape Town for the first time since the infamous ‘Sandpapergate’ scandal in 2018.
Australia had been sweating on the fitness of the 37-year-old heading into the third Test, after Smith had injured his neck during the tourists’ second Test defeat in Gqeberha.
Australia skipper Pat Cummins confirmed at the toss on Tuesday that Smith was a late omission and “wasn’t happy with how his neck was feeling”.
