Hyderabad:A 29-year-old software engineer from Borabanda was allegedly cheated of Rs 13.44 lakh by fraudsters running an online escort service racket. In his complaint to the Cyberabad cybercrime police, the victim said he had searched online for escort services and came across a website.
He contacted the mobile numbers listed on the website through WhatsApp, where the suspects, speaking in Hindi and English, claimed they could arrange women for entertainment.
The fraudsters shared photographs through WhatsApp and asked the victim to make payments towards hotel booking, service charges, office charges, medical verification, GST and other processing fees. They provided multiple UPI IDs, bank accounts in different names and digital wallet accounts to receive the money.
Assured that the amounts would be refunded after registration, the victim transferred a total of Rs 13,44,589 in several instalments between April 4 and April 24 from his bank accounts, debit card and credit card. The accused continued demanding additional payments saying they were refundable. When he contacted them on the promised date, they stopped responding.
Realising that he was duped, the victim approached the Cyberabad police and lodged a complaint, naming one Nitin Kumar along with the management of the website as being involved in the alleged fraud. Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR and initiated an investigation into the online cheating case.
