The most recent, slightly overdue episode of South Park, “The Woman in the Hat,” found President Donald Trump being haunted by the presence of a mysterious figure that seems to be his wife (plus his own Taco Bell-encrusted feces). But it also featured a brand new storyline involving Stan, Kyle and Kenny, none of whom seem to have even noticed that their pal Cartman had been abducted by antichrist expert Peter Thiel.
After months of people complaining that the show has become “too political,” in a nakedly self-referential twist, Stan gets hung up on the idea that the town of South Park has become “too political.” And this complaint quickly leads to him to embark on a “South Park Sucks Now” crypto grift.
But South Park fans were quick to point out that this episode about how the show has neglected its core characters may have accidentally screwed up a key detail about one of its core characters.
Don’t Miss
In an early scene, after Kyle questions Stan’s new meme token business, the youngest member of the Marsh family defends himself by arguing, “I have to do something Kyle. I’m nine years old and I live in a retirement home.”
Over on Reddit, a number of people took issue with Stan’s claim about being 9 years old. “Stan mentions he’s 9, I thought he’s 10?!” one user asked. “Stan says he is 9 years old?????” another questioned. Some suggested that Trey Parker and Matt Stone must have somehow forgotten that Stan turning 10 was kind of a big deal on the show. “His depressing af birthday episodes I won’t ever forget,” a viewer shared.
While the show’s timeline is as nonsensical as every other long-running animated show, Stan’s 10th birthday was famously chronicled back in the season 15 episodes “You’re Getting Old” and “Ass Burgers.” Upon reaching the age of 10, Stan discovers that all the stuff he used to like has turned to literal shit. In retrospect, Parker and Stone’s apparent commentary on their own transition to middle age may be the bleakest poop joke in pop-culture history.
It’s possible that the duo simply forgot about this particular detail, which they introduced way back in 2011. But then again, maybe Stan lied about his age on this week’s show because he’s still grappling with the existential (and fecal) angst of being a full decade old.
