Special Voter Enrolment Camps Draw Poor Response

HYDERABAD: The two‑day special voter enrolment camps ended on Friday with a lukewarm response in the city. Though booth level officers (BLOs) were stationed at polling stations on Friday — after many had played truant on Thursday — electors did not turn up, reflecting the low polling percentage in Hyderabad over the years. Even politicial parties’ booth level agents (BLAs) were absent from many polling stations.

While BLOs blamed electors for showing little interest, electors said the camps were held on working days. “Such camps should be held on holidays or Saturday–Sunday,” said one elector. Election authorities had instructed BLOs to conduct house‑to‑house visits, but such visits were not carried out in several parts of the city during the two days.

Enrolling new and left‑out electors was the primary task of BLOs during the camp. However, the few people who visited polling stations also raised other issues, including change of address. According to data from the State Election authorities, enumeration forms from 2,64,87,213 electors were received and their names included in the draft electoral roll.
