Djed Spence has reportedly claimed the final place in England’s World Cup squad that will be announced later this morning.
The Tottenham full-back will go to the United States, Canada and Mexico at the expense of Trent Alexander-Arnold despite a largely average season that is still very much alive with Spurs needing a point against Everton on Sunday to guarantee they avoid relegation.
It appears the latest in a series of mystifying decisions from Three Lions head coach Thomas Tuchel, who called round the players that have missed out yesterday afternoon, leading to a series of leaks to the media ahead of the official announcement that starts at 0945 UK time this morning.
Maguire expresses disappointment at England snub
Harry Maguire confirmed he would not be going, releasing a statement on X expressing his disappointment, while Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Morgan Gibbs-White, Lewis Hall and Luke Shaw have also been reportedly overlooked.
Maguire said on X: “I was confident I could of [sic] played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had.
“I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players, all the best this summer.”
Dan Burn and Jordan Henderson have been included with Tuchel talking previously about the experienced pair setting the tone in the dressing room while Ivan Toney, who plays in the Saudi Pro League, and Ollie Watkins will go as back-ups to Harry Kane.
Henderson has been chosen ahead of Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton with Kobbie Mainoo rewarded for a strong second half of the season at Manchester United under Michael Carrick.
Expected England squad: Pickford, Henderson, Trafford; James, Livramento, Spence, Guehi, Konsa, Stones, Quansah, O’Reilly, Burn; Rice, Anderson, Bellingham, Henderson, Rogers, Mainoo; Kane, Toney, Watkins, Saka, Madueke, Rashford, Gordon, Eze
