Scouts who watch the Yankees regularly — both within and outside the organization — believed this team was built differently, as the organization looked to become more versatile.
One thing most weren’t sold on, though, was that two of their top offensive prospects — both at premier defensive positions — would be ready to contribute in the playoffs so soon, since it was just over a year ago that George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones were teammates at Double-A Somerset.
But they were in The Bronx on Wednesday night — and while it was Cody Bellinger’s homer that drove the final nail into Boston’s coffin in the decisive inning, the rally opened in the sixth not with a blast, but with a strikeout.
Jones, facing lefty Garrett Crochet and the Yankees up by just a run, struck out to lead off the inning.
