The world of Spider-Noir may be rooted in shadows, mystery and pulp storytelling, but for one of its stars, stepping into the shoes of Robbie Robertson carried a significance far beyond the screen. As one of the earliest prominent Black characters in mainstream comics, Robertson’s legacy has long held cultural weight. And while approaching the role, Lamorne Morris admitted that history was impossible to ignore.
“It did a little bit. There is weight when you are one of the firsts,” Lamorne shared during an exclusive interaction with Filmfare, when asked about carrying the legacy of playing one of the first prominent Black comic book characters. “When you watch the show, you will see a little bit more of that,” he added.
Still, rather than allowing the legacy to define every creative choice, the actor focused on grounding the character in authenticity. For him, the key was not imitation. “You can make it your own version as long as you bring your authentic self to it and bring your own choices. I like to always say, as actors, we are just like people. So we are all individuals. No one can tell my story or no one knows me as well as me,” he explained.
That thought shaped the interpretation of Robertson in Spider-Noir. Interestingly, the series is already generating anticipation for its darker reimagining of the Spider-Man universe. The actor believes individuality is what ultimately gives any performance its uniqueness. “So when you bring yourself to a character, it is going to be unique. It is going to be different because no one can do it like you,” he said.

Lamorne also acknowledged feeling “a little bit of pressure at the top,” but credited his collaborators for helping him settle into the role naturally. “When you are working with great partners, you just get a chance to play and get into that rhythm,” he added. He also hopes audiences connect with the larger story and perhaps take something meaningful away from Robbie Robertson along the way.
