The shooting of director SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi has been progressing briskly in Hyderabad. But it looks like the going has been tough for the filmmaker. The film’s shooting has been dented by Hyderabad water crises.
Varanasi shooting halted
Varanasi’s film crew is currently shooting in Hyderabad, but the makers are facing a water shortage. Rajamouli’s team has reportedly asked for 150 water tankers, each with a capacity of 10,000 litres, for the shooting from May 18. Apparently, water from the 150 tankers would be used to construct a water pond for filming at a film studio (on the city’s outskirts). The unit wanted to film underwater sequences for which they approached the water board with a request. The production house reportedly stated that it would bear the transportation cost and requested that the water be purified to meet filming requirements. But the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has denied the request citing surge in demand for water across the city due to summer.
According to reports, water board officials expressed concern that the department is already under pressure to meet the public demand for water tankers. They prioritized providing water to the public during the hot summer and hence couldn’t assure the desired water supply requirement for Varanasi filmmakers. The unexpected development has certainly caused a delay in the production.

Varanasi’s shoot more than 50 per cent complete
The shooting for Varanasi has been done more than 50 per cent. Rajamouli has slotted the film’s release for April 7, 2027. While the globetrotting adventure was already filmed in locations like Odisha and Africa, Antarctica schedule has been on the cards. While the logistic arrangements have been complete, the makers are yet to commence shooting. Starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumar, Varanasi is written by Vijayendra Prasad (Rajamouli’s father).
