Strictly Come Dancing fans have been watching with interest after Stacey Dooley and her partner, professional dancer Kevin Clifton, made a major decision for their family
Documentary filmmaker Stacey Dooley and her partner, Kevin Clifton, have started a new chapter in the North West, which initially left their friends worried. The couple moved out of the capital to the Merseyside area with their daughter, Minnie, in 2023.
Stacey made the move after spending much of her life in London. She was born in Luton and previously lived in Lewisham, South East London.
However, she has said she’s “always had an affinity” with Liverpool, likely because her family has roots in Speke, and she has described herself as an “honorary Scouser”.
And while she says she’s “so happy” in her new home — and her boyfriend, former Strictly pro Kevin, is reportedly “relaxed” about the set-up — it seems Stacey encountered some scepticism prior to the move.
Stacey told the Home Again Podcast: “It’s not like it was a very sort of sensible, thought-through plan. It was more like, ‘I want this house. Let’s do it’. And Kev’s such a good sport cos everyone’s like, ‘You’re moving from London to Liverpool?'”
“I was like, ‘Yeah’. They were like, ‘How long have you thought about this?’ I was like, ‘(I) decided last week’. They were like, ‘And Kev’s chill with that?’ I was like, ‘You know, Kev’s pretty relaxed.'”
“Like, if I say, ‘Oh, we’re going to’…If I said to Kev tomorrow, ‘We’re moving to the Isle of Skye’, I think he would actually just move to the Isle of Skye.”
Stacey revealed that people in her friendship group challenged her on the move, asking whether leaving London could harm her career. She also highlighted what she referred to as an “element of snobbery”.
Stacey — whose credits include Stacey Dooley Investigates, Ready for War?, Inside the Undertakers and Meet the Shoplifters — said her mortgage “guy” pressed her on how she would continue to meet the monthly repayments.
Stacey was quick to point out that she was moving to Liverpool, not “Mars”. She added: “I do think sometimes as well, it’s like a sudden thing. There’s like an element of snobbery. It’s like, ‘Oh, you’re leaving London.
“‘Like, you’re never going to work again’, or you know, ‘All the opportunities are down here’. I don’t really think that’s so true anymore, especially being so close to Manchester. You know what I mean?”.
Recording the podcast from London, Stacey went on to say: “I can’t imagine being back down here now. Isn’t that funny? Like, you never know what’s going to happen.
“And I’m actually quite sort of loose with plans, sort of long-term plans, but I can’t imagine not living there at the moment, for the time being.”
