Chennai: DMK president M.K. Stalin on Tuesday condemned the arrest of Dharapuram Naam Thamizhar Katchi (NTK) candidate Karthiga besides attacking the government on murder incidents and the prevalence of drugs. The former Chief Minister’s statements were countered by Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar and MDMK general secretary Vaiko who said murder incidents take place under all the governments.

He said Karthiga belonged to an oppressed community and such women involving themselves in politics should be welcomed and encouraged beyond policy differences. When she attacked the DMK, the party provided clarifications and did not resort to jailing her. But, the TVK government did not have tolerance and democratic spirit and described the arrest as an attempt to divert the arrest of a TVK functionary for peddling methamphetamine. Two parties, the TVK and BJP are vying with one another in arresting those who are protesting and protecting the culprits, he said, demanding the release of Karthiga.

Stalin in a statement said an accused who came out on bail was murdered in Dindigul a few days ago while another history sheeter was murdered in a similar manner in Sivagangai on Sunday. He said a nurse was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and murdered near Perundurai and a TVK union secretary was arrested for peddling ganja in Vedaranyam. A ruling party functionary Bhoopalan who tried to convert Tamil Nadu into a methamphetamine manufacturing centre was also arrested.

He asked if the State police were not able to arrest him or they did not take action since he belonged to the ruling party. He accused Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay of not paying attention to the police department and this is manifested in the murders and drug peddling cases.

Countering Stalin’s allegations, Vaiko, addressing the media at Tiruchi said the opposition parties are blowing up isolated incidents of crimes out of proportion. “Murders take place in different places for different reasons and how can the police be present at all such places and prevent the murders. No one can prevent murder which have been taking place under all the governments”. Once a crime occurs, the police could only investigate and take quick action, he added.

Replying to questions on Stalin’s allegations, Nirmal Kumar said it was the DMK which took the State to the worst condition in drug peddling. The drug methamphetamine was introduced to Tamil Nadu during the DMK regime and the drug network spread throughout the State in the five years of DMK rule. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is taking action to check the drugs and he would take action on anyone who commits a mistake, Nirmal Kumar said, adding the DMK government could have covered up the entire case.
