Chennai: In a ‘whistle revolution’ in Tamil Nadu, the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor Vijay shocked the ruling DMK and AIADMK by leading in 107 constituencies out of the 234 seats at the end of six to nine round of counting. The TVK is 11 seats short of majority opening the possibility of a hung Assembly and a coalition government in Tamil Nadu.

Vijay totally rewrote the political history of capital Chennai by taking leads in almost all the seats pushing the AIADMK to the third place. This is the first time after 50 years, a party other than the DMK and AIADMK will win a seat in Chennai.

TVK will be the first party without a Dravidian prefix to emerge as the top party in Tamil Nadu for the last 59 years. Tamil Nadu has become one State where all the three top parties are regional players pushing the national parties like the Congress and BJP to irrelevance.

DMK suffered a massive setback registering leads only in 48 seats while the AIADMK is leading in 58 seats, less than what it received in the 2021 Assembly elections. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin who totally ignored Vijay and focused his attacks on the BJP in an Assembly election is trailing behind by 7,361 votes at his Kolathur constituency in Chennai following a strong rippling effect of TVK leader Vijay contesting in the nearby Perambur constituency.

Vijay is leading by more than 10,000 votes in both Perambur and Tiruchi East while AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami is leading by more than 20,000 votes in his Edappadi constituency where the nomination of TVK candidate was rejected as he was absent during the scrutiny of nominations.

The Congress which received 28 seats from the DMK after a public wrangling is leading in 5 seats while the BJP accused of stopping the release of Vijay starrer ‘Jana Nayagar’ using the Central Board of Film Certification is moving towards a rout, leading in only 2 out of the 27 seats in contested.

The DMDK which joined the DMK alliance at the eleventh hour and was given 10 seats resulting in description of the DMK alliance as a ‘cash box’ alliance is leading in only 2 seats. The CPI, CPIand VCK are leading in two seats each while the MDMK and IUML are leading in one seat each.
