HYDERABAD: Aimed at strengthening the vocational education in the state, a 40-member education delegation, led by education secretary Dr Yogita Rana, visited Finland for a five-day Teachers’ Exposure and Educational Exchange Programme. The team included 28 teachers and 12 officials.

“This diverse composition ensured that insights from Finland’s globally-recognised education model could be studied from multiple perspectives, pedagogical, administrative and systemic, laying the foundation for meaningful reforms in Telangana’s school education,” said State Institute of Vocational Education principal Dr Jyothsna Rani.

As vocational education is often dismissed as a fallback option in India, Finland has shown the world that technical and vocational training can stand shoulder to shoulder with academic education. In Telangana’s vocational landscape, comprising ITIs, polytechnics, and intermediate vocational courses has made strides but remains constrained by rigidity and perception.

The delegation said the courses have to be more flexible and allow students to move into BTech through bridge courses and improve student evaluation with proper mentorship. Awareness campaigns should be held at higher secondary level in both vocational and regular stream to remove stigma.
