Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the government would deploy artificial intelligence (AI) tools to plug revenue leakages and improve the state’s fiscal health without affecting the ease of doing business.
Revanth Reddy on Friday was speaking with noted economist and former chief economic advisor Arvind Subramanian on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen Telangana’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) ecosystem and enhance the state government’s revenue collections.
During a meeting, the Chief Minister and Dr Subramanian discussed strategies to enhance GST revenues as Telangana’s economy continues to expand rapidly. The discussions focused on adopting AI-driven solutions to identify loopholes in the GST system, improve tax administration and formulate a robust roadmap for increasing state revenues.
Revanth Reddy also reviewed the reforms required in the GST and excise departments to improve revenue mobilisation. He said the government would introduce a special AI-enabled information system for GST officials to simplify processes and strengthen tax administration.
At the same time, he emphasised that the new system should not cause any inconvenience or disruption to businesses. Subramanian explained that technology could be used to increase revenue collections while simultaneously improving the state’s ease of doing business.
The discussions also centred on preventing leakages, particularly in the building and construction materials sector, by ensuring greater coordination among the municipal administration, Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), panchayat raj, electricity, finance and commercial taxes departments through AI-based data integration. It was suggested that details of construction material requirements and corresponding tax estimates be captured at the stage of applying for approvals for large buildings and contract works, enabling better monitoring and compliance.
The Chief Minister further said governance could be significantly strengthened by integrating data from the proposed AI platform with the MeeSeva, Aarogyasri and Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) databases, thereby enabling better coordination across departments and improving policy implementation.
Chief Minister’s Adviser K. Ramakrishna Rao, Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju, commercial taxes and excise secretary M. Raghunandan Rao, excise commissioner Ch Hari Kiran and other senior officials attended the meeting.
