Hyderabad: On World Blood Cancer Day, May 28, it is observed that treatment and stem cell transplantation procedures under the Aarogyasri scheme have steadily risen in Telangana over the last five years, reflecting both increasing patient access and growing healthcare expenditure, according to the Cancer Atlas of Telangana study submitted by cancer specialist Dr Nori Dattatreyudu.

The report, analysing treatment trends between April 2020 and September 2025, showed that allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplantation procedures accounted for the highest expenditure under the scheme.

Among the most expensive procedures, allogeneic stem cell transplantation recorded an expenditure of ₹11 crore, followed by autologous transplantation at ₹6.97 crore. While follow‑up and vaccination packages incurred comparatively low costs, the transplant procedures themselves required major financial resources.

Data further revealed that autologous stem cell transplantation registered the highest claims count at 173, while allogeneic follow‑up packages recorded 156 claims.

The number of patients undergoing stem cell transplantation also increased significantly over the years. The report stated that treated patients rose from nearly 14 in 2020‑21 to around 94 in 2024‑25, while expenditure increased from ₹0.76 crore to ₹4.88 crore during the same period.
