The dispute reportedly escalated after Stevie’s reps tried to access the property for insurance-related purposes, but Efferson refused the inspection. His legal team allegedly stepped in and terminated his ex’s decades-long residency as a consequence.
TMZ reported that Wonder’s team had given Efferson 30 days and a deadline of August 27, 2026, to vacate the property, but she refused. As a result, they issued another eviction notice before filing the lawsuit. On October 23, 2026, the Superstition singer reportedly filed a formal complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court, requesting Efferson’s eviction from his property.
A source told Billboard, “She’s refusing to leave, so the lawyers are heavily involved. Of course his preference was to settle this amicably, but the way she’s reacted gives him no choice but to make this a formal matter.”
According to TMZ’s sources, Carmen was left ‘blindsided’ by the lawsuit, especially given her decades of romantic history with the singer. Though they had split up a long time ago, she allegedly told her friends that Stevie had ‘promised’ her that the L.A. house was hers, though she admitted she never received a deed transferring ownership of the property to her.

“There’s the inevitable possibility of a tell-all at some stage, which would be incredibly embarrassing for a guy who prides himself on peace, love and kindness… At this stage of his life, especially, it’s the last thing he needs or deserves.”
The singer, who married Tomeeka Robyn Bracy in 2017, has not publicly commented on the dispute.
