TIRUNELVELI: Water storage in the 18 reservoirs across Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts at 20.7 per cent of their combined capacity on Wednesday is substantially lower than the corresponding level last year, despite widespread rainfall across the three southern districts over the past week.
According to the water resources department’s daily report, the 18 reservoirs held a combined storage of 4,573.03 million cubic feet (mcft), against their total capacity of 22,092.74 mcft, as of Wednesday.
Notably, the combined storage on the corresponding day last year was nearly three times the current level, at 12,702.26 mcft.
Papanasam reservoir received an inflow of 1,828.599 cusecs and held 790 mcft of water, against its capacity of 5,500 mcft. Manimutharu reservoir had 1,052.90 mcft of water, against its capacity of 5,511 mcft. In Kanyakumari district, Pechiparai and Perunchani reservoirs had 1,284.45 mcft and 651.35 mcft of water respectively.
Mambalathuraiyar reservoir, in Kanyakumari district, had the highest storage level at 69.3 per cent of its capacity, followed by Gundaru reservoir, in Tenkasi district, at 64.5 per cent. In contrast, Vadakkupachayar reservoir, in Tirunelveli district, had just 1.8 per cent of its capacity.
The reservoirs recorded cumulative rainfall of 335.2 mm. The Kodayar basin division accounted for 177.2 mm and the Chittar basin division, 112 mm. Perunchani received the highest rainfall among the major reservoirs at 61.4 mm, while Papanasam recorded 4 mm.
The water resources department data indicates the uneven distribution of rainfall across the three districts, with overall reservoir storage remaining significantly below last year’s level despite widespread rainfall over the past week.
