Jangaon: Former deputy chief minister and Station Ghanpur MLA Kadiyam Srihari said the objective was to conserve every drop of rainwater and make it available to farmers for irrigation.
On Saturday, Srihari inspected works to divert floodwater flowing unused from a stream near Srimannarayana Puram in Raghunathpally mandal to the Nawabpet reservoir in Lingalaghanpur mandal through a canal.
He said officials and contractors had been alerted and works taken up to divert the large inflow of water into the reservoir instead of allowing it to go to waste.
The water would benefit thousands of acres of ayacut in Raghunathpally and Lingalaghanpur mandals, he said, adding that the floodwater received during drought-like conditions was like a lifeline for farmers.
Srihari said the canals in the Srimannarayana Puram area had earlier been filled with sand and silt, but he had taken special initiative to get them cleared and repaired.
As a result, Devadula waters could be taken up to the Nawabpet reservoir, he said.
He said Devadula waters would be used to protect the constituency from drought and urged farmers to use water judiciously.
Keeping water availability in mind during the coming Yasangi season, he advised farmers to cultivate only short-duration crops.
