Strict Action Warned Against Harming State Bird Palapitta

Hyderabad police commissioner, VC Sajjanar, issued a serious warning. He stated that strict legal action will follow against anyone who harms or cages Indian rollers, locally known as Palapitta, the state bird of Telangana. Many people capture them during the Dasara festival season for commercial trade. They cut their wings and trap them in cages.

Sajjanar questioned how anyone can find joy in a festival by torturing mute animals. He reminded citizens that these birds are true friends of farmers and protectors of the environment. Capturing, selling, or displaying Indian rollers violates the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

Citizens were urged to show compassion during the festive season. People should never encourage the display of caged birds. The public must report any such incidents immediately. Helpline numbers and dial 112 are made available for reporting violations. Responsible citizens are expected to protect wildlife and help stop this illegal practice across the state.

Report illegal display or possession of Palapitta to Telangana State Forest Department on 1800 425 5364.

“Seeing a Palapitta in nature may be considered auspicious, but no bird’s suffering should ever be mistaken for good luck,” a parastatal authority mentioned.
