Strictly’s Amy Dowden says ‘it hurts so much’ as she and Chris Appleton axed
Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden has been left devastated as she was axed from the show in the first elimination of the series. Professional dancer Amy and her partner Chris Appleton faced a dance off against Jaime Winstone and Carlos Gu, with the judges unanimously choosing to save the latter.
And it’s a call that left Amy saying it “hurts so much” as she left the show in the first dance off for the second year in a row. She shared an emotional statement on Instagram alongside a carousel of images from her short time with the celebrity hairstylist.
Amy wrote: “@chrisappleton1 I honestly don’t think words can quite describe how proud I am of you. Seeing your Strictly journey come to an end is emotional, but what I’ll treasure most isn’t the result, it’s the friendship, memories and special moments we’ve shared along the way.
“I know unfortunately only too well heartbreak. But I also know that the reason it hurts so much is because of the friendship and bond we’ve formed and that’s something that isn’t going anywhere.”

Amy went on: “From the nerves, the laughter and the endless rehearsals to the moments when things felt tough, you gave everything you had. You showed such heart, determination and kindness, and it has been an absolute privilege to share this journey with you.
“Strictly may have brought us together as partners, but I truly believe it has given me a friend for life. Our dancing journey may have ended, but our friendship certainly hasn’t.”
And she told the stylist he should be incredibly proud of what he has achieved, thanking him for the memories and laughter and for “simply being you”.
She ended by saying: “I’ll be cheering you on every step of the way. Love you, my friend. Love your Welsh princess as you call me xxxx”
And Chris was quick to respond in the comments section, declaring his love for the dancer. He said the “greatest gift” of being on the show was being partnered with Amy. “Thank you for being more than I could have ever wished for in a dance partner because you became a friend for life,” he said.
“Keep shining keep smiling and keep showing everyone you talent your heart because you are one of one my friend.”
Fellow contestants were also among those commenting on the post. John Nellis shared a simple love heart emoji, while Lacey Turner did similar, but with a broken heart.
Graeme Hall left a longer message, with the Dogfather telling Amy: “Oh Amy. You’re a beautiful dancer and an amazing person. Just know that the place won’t be the same without your beaming smile. Sending a big hug… G x”
While they weren’t bottom of the leaderboard after two weeks, they weren’t far off, being second from last. And after his Baywatch rendition both the fans and judges felt Chris’ time was up.
