Strictly Come Dancing host Emma Willis’ husband, Busted rocker Matt Willis, has opened up about the moment he realised how badly she’d been impacted by his addiction
Busted band member Matt Willis has spoken about the moment he discovered his wife, Strictly Come Dancing co-host Emma Willis had secretly diarised all the times he’d lied to her about his drinking.
Said diary concerned Matt’s habits, including notes of what he had been drinking, whether he had said he wouldn’t drink, and if he had kept his promise.
Matt, 43, has been married to Emma, 50, for nearly 20 years, with the Love Is Blind UK hosts having been together for more than two decades in total. Together they have three children, Isabelle, Ace, and Trixie.
Emma, who makes her debut on Strictly this weekend, has been with Matt through his darkest moments, but also his recovery. In recent years, Matt has spoken extensively about his experiences on his On The Mend podcast.
It was on a recent episode of that podcast, in which he interviewed Michelle Heaton, that he told the former Liberty X singer about what he’d found after making it to sobriety.
He said “Emma kept a diary towards the end of my drinking of what she saw me drink like, ‘He drunk this today. He drunk this today. He told me he wasn’t going to drink, but he drunk this and now he’s drinking this’.
“And I read this, right? I didn’t ever know this existed for eight years or something. And I read this diary and I was like, ‘This is a quarter of what I was doing’.
“I was so good at hiding it, you know, well, I thought I was. I was so good at hiding it. Like, I had routines, I had things put into place so I’d never be without a drink because I couldn’t be.”
However, Matt went on to recover and his relationship with Emma has remained strong. The pair have also discussed what they think is a good relationship and what is healthy and unhealthy within it.
In a recent discussion on the Tea At Four podcast, Emma specifically mentioned how they had previously tried to change one another unsuccessfully.
She said: “And not trying to change someone. There have been times when we’ve tried to change each other, and actually, you kinda go, ‘Yeah, but I love all of him so… or all of her. So why am I trying to change?
“‘Let’s communicate and go, this has p*****d me off or this is not working for me’, rather than going, ‘Well, it’s not working’. How do we make it work for both of us?
“Or how do we work around it? Swings and roundabouts. But at the same time, I haven’t got a f******g clue.”
Meanwhile Emma is due to appear as co-host of Strictly Come Dancing alongside Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe on the launch show today (September 19) from 7.25pm on BBC One.
