Designer to the stars Law Roach talks about dressing the world’s biggest names, why he adores Cannes and the important life lesson he’s trying to learn
Designer Law Roach, believes his client and friend, Wicked star Ariana Grande is ‘underestimated’ in the fashion world. The pioneering Chicago creative, 47, who seemed to confirm in an interview in March that Zendaya and fiance Tom Holland had tied the knot, was in Cannes for its famous film festival.
And when the Mirror caught up with the ‘celebrity image architect’ on the French Riviera as he collaborated on a Magnum pop-up, as singer Kylie famously did in 2022 with South Korean DJ Peggy Gou, Roach spilled on his proudest high-profile collaborations.
Wicked star Ariana first worked with Roach during her My Everything era, and reunited in late 2025 for the Wicked: For Good press tour – where she stunned in a series of archive and vintage gowns in homage to the Wizard of Oz, and the launch of her album Eternal Sunshine.
He told the Mirror, “Ariana is incredible. I think she is deeply underestimated as a fashion mind.” But there are others who have clearly made a lasting impression, too.
“There are so many people who have shaped me as much as I’ve shaped them. Celine Dion is someone I hold in an entirely different category”, he says. “Her commitment, her courage, the way she commands a room, just by walking into it. She’s one of the greatest performers who has ever lived.”
Another is acclaimed actress Kerry Washington, whose acclaimed performance in hit political thriller drama Scandal made her the first Black woman to headline a major American network drama series in nearly 40 years.
“Kerry brought such intelligence and intentionality to every single conversation we had – nothing was ever just about ‘clothes’, it was always about what the clothes were saying.”
“Each of these people taught me something different about the relationship between image and identity, and that’s not something you can learn anywhere else.”
As for Cannes, he says this part of the world will always feel special for him. “Cannes is one of those rare places that never loses its magic, no matter how many times you’ve been.
“What I love most about it is the collision of worlds – the cinema, fashion, art, music, culture all happening in one place at the same time.
He adds, “As for friends, I never go anywhere expecting to bump into people. The best moments always find you when you’re not looking.
“That said, Cannes has a way of putting the right people in the same room at the right time! I’ll leave it at that.”
Roach, who is also a star on US TV and has served as a judge on HBO Max’s vogueing competition series Legendary, Project Runway and RuPaul’s Drag Race. has achieved a lot in his glittering career.
He is largely thought to have been the guiding light behind Zendaya’s ascension to global fashion icon status, and has been behind some memorable Met Gala ensembles for the likes of Rihanna and Anne Hathaway.
But his burning ambition right now, he says, is personal – and it’s about learning, for the first time in his frenetic life, to slow down a little.
He says, “Personally, I want to slow down long enough to really feel the life I’ve built. I’ve spent so long moving at full speed that sometimes, the most radical thing I can imagine doing is just being still.
“That’s the bucket-list item nobody talks about, learning how to receive everything you’ve worked for. And I’m working on that.”
Roach was Magnum’s first ever ‘Taste Architect’ at this year’s Cannes, unveiling a fashion showcase for the House of Magnum® campaign.
The ice cream company had a pop-up from 13-22 May on the Croisette, showcasing craftsmanship, individuality and modern indulgence through a design-led lens.
