“Such a Stupid Take,” “He’s Right in a Way”: Fans React As Nick Saban Calls 24-Team College Football Playoff a Money Grab

The NCAA is set to approve an expansion for the College Football Playoff. The postseason tournament will expand from a 12-team format to 24 teams. Four automatic bids will go to the Power 4 conference champions, one automatic bid will go to the highest-ranked team, and 19 bids will be at large.

Seeds 1 through 8 will earn a first-round bye, while Seeds 9 through 24 will have to play first-round games away from home. Nick Saban expressed his discontent with the expansion. He said too few teams can challenge for the National Championship, and this change is about the money. Fans were divided over his comments.

“This is such a stupid take. Of course there aren’t 24 teams that can win the championship. There aren’t 12 teams that can. Not even 4 teams Only one team can win it. That’s how tournaments work,” one fan said.

“He’s right in a way but it’s about money yes and giving other teams at least a chance at it. That’s the whole point,” another fan said.

Nick Saban sounds off on 24-team College Football Playoff

Saban doubted whether 24 teams can even play at the highest level and challenge for a national championship.

“It’s too many… there’s not 24 teams in the country that can win a National Championship,” Saban said. “So, what is the reason to actually do it? It’s about the money. What you’re giving up, which I hate to see… the SEC Championship Game. Playing in the SEC Championship was a big thing for our players and our fans. It was a tradition and it was a great venue. There’s only two teams who can play in a National Championship, but more teams can play in [conference] championship games. There’s a lot of pride in winning the conference championship.”

He also said losing the SEC Championship Game would affect the players, since they loved that battle. He also said the expansion would force too many games. He also suggested that a 16-team College Football Playoff expansion would have been better.
