Preview for Sunderland v Chelsea

The last time these sides met, on the final day of last season, Sunderland’s victory secured European football for the first time in half a century. Six months on, the mood on Wearside couldn’t be more different. Régis Le Bris’ side are bottom of the Premier League, and Chelsea arrive on Sunday afternoon looking to send them into the international break in the relegation zone.

Sunderland’s form is alarming. They have gone seven league games without a win and have just five points from nine matches. They have failed to score in their last three at the Stadium of Light, losing 2-0 to Arsenal and Brighton and drawing 0-0 with Leeds.

Thursday’s 2-0 home defeat to Dinamo Zagreb was another blow. It was Sunderland’s first defeat in this season’s Europa League, after wins over AZ Alkmaar and Torreense and a draw at Lech Poznań.

Le Bris insists he has the club’s backing and remains defiant. “When you’re in this position, you don’t give up,” he said. “We have to push and show the same ambition, and we will do that against Chelsea. This team has the potential to bounce back and change the story.

“We have had many conversations with our leadership group. They are important because they will show the way.

“I will show the way and the club will, but inside the dressing room our leaders set the tone with their mood, ability to address problems, stick together and show the foundations to get better.

“They are doing their job but now it is a question of the levels. They are trying they best.”

Chelsea are fourth with 16 points, having scored 19 goals and conceded 15. They got back on track with a 2-0 win over Manchester United last weekend, their third win in four league games.

There was disappointment for Cole Palmer on Friday, however, as he was again left out of the England squad by Thomas Tuchel.

“He needs to focus on his thing – and his thing is to play good football and enjoy his game with us, with Chelsea,” said boss Xabi Alonso.

“We spoke about the red card after the Spurs game, but most of the things apart from that are about our game, our football and what we can do better.

“We are very happy with Cole. I think he is enjoying his game, he is connecting very well with the other attackers, he is helping the team and helping the team with developing and improving what we want and what we want to achieve knowing that everything takes time but I am very happy with his quality, his attitude and the impact he is having on the rest of the team.”

The Premier League Table

  • Position 1, 2, 3, 4 : Promotion – Champions League (League phase)
  • Position 5 : Promotion – Europa League (League phase)
  • Position 18, 19, 20 : Relegation – Championship

Prediction for Sunderland v Chelsea

If Sunderland can rediscover the formula the made them so hard to play against last season then they stand an excellent chance. But they need to eradicate the defensive issues that have blighted their season so far.
