Actor Sunil has credited director Sukumar for completely changing the course of his career with the role of Mangalam Seenu in Pushpa: The Rise.
Speaking about the transformation, Sunil revealed that he had approached Sukumar during the lockdown, expressing his desire to explore different kinds of characters beyond comedy.
“I told Sukumar during the lockdown that I was looking for different roles. Within a few days, he offered me the role of Mangalam Seenu in Pushpa,” said Sunil.
The actor admitted he was surprised when Sukumar trusted him with a full-fledged negative role after conducting a few screen tests.
“He specifically told me to stay away from comedy in this character. He wanted me to express emotions mainly through body language. I even had to shave my head every day for the role,” Sunil shared.
The actor said Pushpa completely changed his career trajectory and opened doors across multiple film industries.
“After Pushpa, my life has been full of surprises. I never know which language or what kind of role will come next,” he said humorously.
Sunil recalled an interesting experience during a visit to Kerala after watching Jailer.
“When I went to Kerala after watching Jailer, people handed me scene papers in Tamil,” he laughed.
The actor is now making his entry into the Malayalam film industry with Kaatalan, where he plays an important character named Maari.
“This role has given me immense satisfaction. I have never done a character like this before. I think I got such opportunities because of Pushpa. It is a very varied and versatile role,” he added.
Over the last few years, Sunil has successfully expanded his presence beyond Telugu cinema, sharing screen space with stars like Rajinikanth and Sivakarthikeyan while establishing himself as a strong character actor across South Indian cinema.
