New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Rajasthan government to obtain clear instructions on the health condition of self-styled godman Asaram, who has sought interim bail on medical grounds.
“We don’t want any untoward thing to happen,” the court said during the hearing.
A two-judge bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and P.B. Varale was hearing the plea. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the state, said AIIMS had advised lifestyle changes for Asaram.
“We don’t want ourselves to be blamed or you to be blamed,” the court observed, asking the state to clarify his medical status.
Mehta said the state would file an affidavit by July 20. He told the court that there was some bleeding due to a gastrointestinal issue but described it as temporary, adding that Asaram was under medication.
Counsel for Asaram said he was a high-risk patient. Mehta, however, submitted that three months ago Asaram had travelled to Ayodhya and Kashi Vishwanath and moved around on foot.
The court posted the matter for hearing on July 21.
Asaram had moved the apex court seeking interim bail after the Rajasthan High Court on May 27 upheld his conviction and life sentence in a 2013 rape case involving a minor.
On June 30, the Supreme Court had sought the state’s response to his plea challenging the high court order and directed that existing medical facilities be continued, subject to assessment by the concerned medical authority. It also allowed the petitioner to seek urgent listing in case of deterioration in his condition.
