WASHINGTON: In a major rebuke to the administration’s immigration agenda, the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down President Donald Trump’s executive order that sought to end birthright citizenship.

The executive order, signed on the first day of Trump’s second term, directed federal agencies to deny automatic citizenship, passports, and Social Security numbers to children born in the U.S. if neither parent was a citizen or permanent resident. The administration had argued that the policy correctly interpreted the 14th Amendment by targeting individuals without a permanent domicile or “allegiance” to the country.

However, the Court’s majority firmly rejected this reinterpretation, ruling that the order directly violates the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States.” The ruling preserves more than a century of legal precedent.

This marks the second major policy defeat for the administration from the high court this year, following a February decision that struck down the president’s broad global tariffs. While initial rumors suggested a 5-4 split, official court briefings confirm a more decisive defeat for the order, with reports indicating a 6-3 or 7-2 breakdown against the administration. Trump, who historically attended the oral arguments in April, had previously signaled on social media that he anticipated an adverse ruling.
