TIRUPATI: Food safety concerns surfaced in Nellore and Tirupati after officials detected unhygienic conditions and questionable storage practices during surprise inspections at hotels and food outlets.
In Nellore, district collector Himanshu Shukla warned hotel managements that surprise inspections would continue and strict action would be taken against violations. Along with Superintendent of Police Ajitha Vejendla, he inspected several hotels in the city on Friday evening with food safety officials.
At Hotel Riyaz, the collector noticed poor sanitation and directed the management to improve cleanliness. At Basota Hotel, he reviewed food preparation, checked the quality of biryani and instructed staff not to store raw meat in plastic covers. He also questioned the presence of curd packets nearing expiry. Staff said the curd had been purchased in the morning for use later in the day.
The collector directed hotel operators to strictly follow food safety norms and ensure only fresh and quality food was served. He warned that hotels would be sealed if expired or unsafe food items were found in use. He also made it clear that reused cooking oil would not be permitted.
Food safety officials later issued improvement notices to the two hotels, directing them to ensure compliance within two weeks.
In Tirupati, municipal health officer Dr Yuva Anvesh led inspections at hotels and food centres following complaints over food quality. Officials said stale mutton, spoiled chicken and rotten eggs were found during the checks. Samples were seized and sent for laboratory testing.
The identified establishments were closed pending test results. Further action would be taken based on the reports, officials said.
