Hyderabad: Police have registered a case against the Kommala village sarpanch, the gram panchayat secretary and unidentified dog catchers in Suryapet for allegedly capturing 87 stray dogs and relocating them to a forest area, police said on Wednesday.
The FIR was registered at Arvapally Police Station on May 12 under provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita following a complaint by Adulapuram Goutham, Cruelty Prevention Manager at the Stray Animal Foundation of India.
According to the complaint, a video uploaded on March 24 on an Instagram page allegedly showed stray dogs from Kommala village being “captured brutally and relocated to a forest area” on the instructions of the village sarpanch and gram panchayat secretary.
Goutham told police that he contacted the village secretary over phone on March 24. During the conversation, the secretary allegedly said that 87 dogs had been captured and relocated to a forest area. The complaint stated that the village sarpanch, during another phone call on the same day, also allegedly confirmed that the dogs had been relocated.
“It is further submitted that for carrying out this activity, a dog-catching team was hired and, during the capture operation, attempts were allegedly made to maim and brutally handle the stray dogs,” the complaint said.
Sub-inspector E. Saidulu registered the case and took up investigation.
