KOLKATA: Days before the Assembly bypoll at Nandigram in East Midnapore of West Bengal, chief minister Suvendu Adhikari accused his predecessor Mamata Banerjee of faking her leg injuries she had suffered five years ago during her campaign as Trinamul Congress candidate contesting at the same seat against him.

Mr Adhikari also showed the former CM’s medical documents to back his claim and indicated a probe into her “false campaign” of her injuries after the bypoll on October 6. “In 2021, the ex-CM had insulted the entire Nandigram alleging that her leg was broken there. But no evidence of fracture/dislocation was found in her reports,” Mr Adhikari said.

He then showed a medical report of Ms Banerjee issued by the radiodiagnosis department at Bangur Institute of Neuroscience on March 11 five years ago. Mr Adhikari added, “I’m not making any further comments. CID is probing this. We will order a fresh probe into the false campaign once the model code of conduct ends. Action will take place after October 9.”

He later pointed out that steps can be taken against a “false campaign” the way a complaint is investigated. The CM was speaking to the media at the state secretariat Nabanna. Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh, who is a loyalist of Ms Banerjee, however slammed Mr Adhikari’s remarks about her leg injuries and his bid to make it an issue ahead of the bypoll.

He said, “I strongly protest the distasteful remarks passed by the CM about Ms Banerjee’s leg injuries. He can spread distorted messages thanks for being in power. The doctors, who were there and treated her at that time, knew how severe her injuries were. As far as I know, she is yet to recover from her injuries but is forced to work with it.”
