BENGALURU: Tamed elephant Marthanda (53), weighed about 4,500 kgs, who was injured in the attack on him by his fellow tamed elephant Kanjan at Dubare Elephant Camp of Kodagu on Monday, succumbed to its injuries on Tuesday after the elephant failed to respond to the treatment administered by veterinarians.

Kanjan attacked Marthanda during their routine bathing at River Cauvery flowing through the camp. In the fight, Kanjan gave a strong push to Marthanda which made him slip and fell on a visitor, Tulsi (33), a native of Tamil Nadu, who died after coming under the massive sized jumbo.

After Marthanda fell, Kanjan injured him with his tusks and sources told Deccan Chronicle that Marthanda sustained severe stab injuries caused by Kanjan’s tusks in about 6 places.

Minister of Forest and Environment Eshwar Khandre on Tuesday ruled out Kanjan from taking part in Mysore Dasara festivities taking note of its behavior.

Previously, Kanjan and Dhananjaya had a fight in the Mysore Palace premises and both ran amok out of the Palace, a couple of days back, before forest officials controlled them and made them return to the Palace. Kanjan and Dhananjaya were part of a group of tamed elephants chosen for Mysore Dasara festivities.

The background of Kanjan, Eshwar Khandre said, the elephant was captured in Yasloor of Hassan district in 2014 and took part in Mysore Dasara festivities 3 times.
