Chennai:Tamil films now consistently trend across more than 60 countries, penetrating non-traditional territories across Latin America, including Brazil and Mexico, as well as European markets like Poland and Portugal. Platform executives noted that roughly 70 percent of story consumption on the service occurs via subtitles and dubbing, illustrating a robust global appetite for culturally rooted narratives.

Marking a decade of operations in India, Netflix has positioned South Indian cinema as a primary growth engine powering both domestic engagement and international viewership. Speaking at a media interaction in Chennai, Monika Shergill, Vice President of Content at Netflix India, emphasised that regional storytelling — spearheaded by Tamil and Malayalam titles — is regularly topping charts worldwide.

“Some of the finest cinema and stories have come from here,” Shergill remarked. “There is no storytelling without Tamil Nadu.”

A standout example of this cross-border reach is the Tamil original Made in Korea, which clinched the global No. 1 non-English film ranking and trended across 53 countries. The title’s impact saw actor Priyanka Mohan invited to a presidential state dinner and appointed an honorary tourism ambassador by South Korea.

Dismissing friction around theatrical windows, Shergill described streaming as “additive” to cinemas, noting India’s limited screen count of under 9,000 for 1.5 billion people. To streamline discovery, Netflix recently launched ‘Southverse’, a dedicated in-app destination for South Indian films. Looking forward, Shergill urged creators to explore underserved genres like modern urban romance, citing upcoming projects like #Love, and to take bolder cinematic bets.
