Coming into the contest, the 29-year-old Skubal is 7-5 with a 2.79 ERA. Over the previous two seasons — when he won his Cy Youngs — he went 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA and 13-6 with a 2.21 ERA.

After the announcement was made, the California native held back tears in an interview before saying “It’s exciting. I’m excited. They’ve got a good group.”

Skubal joins a stacked Dodgers rotation that includes Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Emmett Sheehan, Roki Sasaki, Justin Wrobleski and possibly Shohei Ohtani as well as an injured Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Gavin Stone. As of now, Dave Roberts’ two-time defending World Series champions are 69-43 and ten games up on the Diamondbacks in the NL West.

As for the Cubs, they’re 6.5 games behind the NL Central-leading Brewers. At the trade deadline, they acquired Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman. The 35-year-old right hander is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA this season.

Chicago is 6-4 in their last ten games. Most recently, they lost two of three against the Yankees. On Sunday, they fell short against Gerrit Cole, another Cy Young Award winner.
