Following the release of The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore last week, some Taylor Swift fans have urged the 36-year old to take a break from music after listening to her four new tracks
Taylor Swift’s new music has sparked mixed reactions online with many fans seemingly unimpressed with her four latest tracks. The 36-year old surprised ‘Swifties’ last week with the release of The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore – an enhanced version of her most recent album.
The new songs are called Patient Zero (released as a single), Cleveland!, Pink Clouding and Babylon. Promoting the music, Taylor penned on Instagram: “About a year ago, you guys did a truly unfathomable thing. Something that completely blew my mind… You gave The Life of a Showgirl the biggest first week for an album in history.”
She continued: “I took a trip to Sweden to celebrate with Max and Shellback, my two collaborators on this album. Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs. I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made.”
On Sunday, meanwhile, Taylor released the video for Patient Zero at the MTV Video Awards, which stars Dakota Johnson, Colin Farrell and Cara Delevigne.
One Swiftie, Olivia shared a clip from the opening of Cleveland! to TikTok with the lyrics: “She’s not as hot as she was, but she was only a four/She was never a girls’ girl, she was just a…/And with all of that money, why’s she dressed like trash?”
It left Olivia pondering: “Taylor baby I think it’s time to take a break from music. The instrumental is literally straight out of a millennial burger joint… what?”
Writing in response, another fan exclaimed: “Sounds like she’s attempting to rap over The Sims building music.”
A second quipped: “This sounds like one of those videos that try and predict what the new Taylor Swift song will sound like, except it’s real.”
A third declared: “This cannot be the same woman who released Cardigan.”
And a fourth TikTok user agreed: “I’m so upset this is the same person who gave us Folklore and Evermore.”
On Facebook, meanwhile, American content creator and musician, Link Lauren said of Taylor: “She seems stuck in Neverland. She’s a billionaire, nearly 37-years old, yet she’s still writing like a 15-year-old girl in the high school hallway. For a woman with everything, she seems almost incapable of simply stepping away.”
And he went on to urge: “Take a break. Live a little. Get inspired. Then come back with a more considered body of work.”
Taylor drew praise, however, as she paid a sweet tribute to the “ultimate showgirl” as she picked up the Video of the Year award at the VMAs for The Fate of Ophelia.
“I want to thank and dedicate this award to one person without whom this wouldn’t be happening, and that person is the ultimate showgirl, Dolly Parton,” she said. “Every single song that she wrote, her storytelling was so vivid and so rich. Listening to her songs, it’s like watching the best music video you have ever seen in your life, every single time you hear what she’s written.
“And she handled this thing with such grace and joy and love and gratitude for the fact that she got to do this, and everything that happened in her life or her career, she channelled back into love and gratitude and appreciation for her fans.”
