A factional clash between two groups of the ruling Telugu Desam (TD) over filing the nomination for the Mandal Parishad President (MPP) post turned violent in Nandalur in YSR Kadapa district on Thursday.
A clash broke out between groups led by TD leaders Balasubramanyam and Eddula Sagar, with both sides insisting that their candidate should file the nomination. The dispute escalated, with their supporters attacking each other with stones and sticks.
They damaged and burnt two cars during the clash. Balasubramanyam, a TD spokesperson and owner of a hospital in Tirupati, allegedly fired five rounds into the air as tensions escalated.
On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and brought members of both groups under control. They took into custody Balasubramanyam and Sagar.
The clash occurred even as nominations for the local body election are going on. YSRC has been accusing the ruling TD of intimidating and preventing the opposition candidates from filing nominations.
The Nandalur incident is due to clashes within the Telugu Desam over filing nomination papers.
