Hyderabad: The Telangana government has sought land or financial assistance from the Centre in return for the 400 acres it has allotted at Bahadurguda in Shamshabad for the proposed bullet train hub for three high-speed rail corridors connecting Hyderabad with Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai, official sources said. A decision to this effect was taken at the state Cabinet meeting held on July 17, and was conveyed to the Centre, sources added.
The government has proposed either an exchange of the 400 acres with land belonging to the railways or other Central organisations within the ORR limits. Alternatively, it has sought adjustment of the value of the 400 acres against Telangana’s equity contribution to the bullet train projects.
If not, the government sought financial assistance from the Centre towards the land acquisition required for construction of railway stations and laying high-speed railway tracks.
Each state through which the corridors pass will have to contribute a specified share of the project cost as equity, with the Centre expected to determine the contribution. For the three corridors connecting Telangana, the Centre is expected to contribute 50 per cent of the project cost, while the remaining 50 per cent will have to be shared as equity by the respective states through which the corridors pass, amounting to 10 per cent each. Telangana now wants the value of the 400 acres allotted for the Shamshabad hub to be adjusted against its equity contribution or the Centre to extend financial assistance for land acquisition.
In comparison, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, which is expected to commence operations in August 2027, is being developed at an estimated cost of `1.1 lakh crore. The Centre is contributing 50 per cent equity, while Maharashtra and Gujarat are contributing 25 per cent each. The equal equity contribution by the two states was decided to ensure that both have an equal say in the project.
