KARIMNAGAR: Senior BRS leader B. Vinod Kumar on Sunday urged TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud to organise an awareness programme for Congress MLAs and ministers on the Godavari and Krishna river systems.
Vinod Kumar, along with other BRS leaders, visited the Yellampalli backwaters at Kotilingala and inspected the Gayatri and Nandi pump houses as part of the party’s Kaleshwaram Bata programme.
Speaking to reporters, he alleged that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, irrigation minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and other ministers lacked adequate understanding of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project.
Referring to the Chief Minister’s remarks describing Kaleshwaram as “Kuleshwaram”, Vinod Kumar questioned how large volumes of water were being lifted from Yellampalli through the Nandi and Gayatri pump houses if the project had collapsed.
He claimed that, barring the Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages, nearly 95 per cent of the Kaleshwaram project remained operational. He added that water availability at Medigadda was high, but floodgates at Yellampalli had been closed as inflows had declined.
Vinod Kumar alleged that nearly 5 lakh cusecs of water was flowing past Medigadda without being utilised. He also claimed that most irrigation projects in the state continued to face water shortages because of deficient rainfall, despite recent rains improving storage in a few reservoirs.
He urged the government to operate the Kannepally pump house to lift Godavari water and divert it to Yellampalli for supply to other irrigation projects, saying the measure would help avert drinking water shortages in the coming months.
