HYDERABAD: IIT Hyderabad has tied up with semiconductor company Kaynes Semicon to give students and researchers greater exposure to an industry that is increasingly important to the electronics used in everyday life, from cars and consumer devices to industrial equipment.
The institute and Kaynes Semicon signed a two-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Friday at Semicon India 2026 in New Delhi. The collaboration will be taken forward through the Wadhwani Innovation Network Centre of Excellence at IIT Hyderabad.
The partnership will allow IIT Hyderabad students to take up internships and projects at Kaynes facilities, while researchers from both sides will explore joint research projects and new technologies in semiconductor assembly, testing and packaging. The two sides will also hold lectures, workshops and training programmes and explore changes to the curriculum based on industry requirements.
Prof. B.S. Murty, Director, IIT Hyderabad, said the partnership would help connect the institute’s work in materials science, electrical engineering and silicon technologies with semiconductor packaging and manufacturing. For students, the tie-up means greater exposure to how semiconductor technology moves from academic research towards actual industrial applications.
Prof. Mahendrakumar Madhavan, dean, Alumni and Corporate Relations, IIT Hyderabad, said the sector would need both new technologies and trained people as it expands. “India’s semiconductor ambitions will require sustained collaboration between academia and industry,” he said.
Kaynes Semicon is a subsidiary of Kaynes Technology India and has a semiconductor facility at Sanand in Gujarat, where it works on outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing. Raghu Panicker, CEO, Kaynes Semicon, said the company would work with IIT Hyderabad researchers and students on technologies relevant to semiconductor assembly, testing and packaging.
