Hyderabad:Labour, Employment and Mines minister G. Vivek Venkatswamy on Friday announced that the state government will institute the PJR Lifetime Achievement Awards to honour distinguished individuals for their contributions to the labour sector. The awards, named after late Congress leader and labour champion P. Janardhan Reddy, will be presented annually on May Day.

The decision was taken in recognition of Reddy’s lifelong struggle for the rights of workers and oppressed sections. Acting on a representation from former MLC Ramulu Naik, the government has directed the Labour Commissioner to frame guidelines and eligibility criteria. The awards will be conferred from May Day 2027.

On the occasion, the minister also presented the Shrama Shakti Awards to trade union leaders, workers and management representatives. More than 100 awardees were recognised for implementing labour laws and ensuring workforce welfare, with several labour leaders honoured for their contributions to workers’ rights.

Fulfilling an assurance given by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Vivek handed over financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to the families of two deceased gig workers — delivery personnel Garlapati Shashidhar Reddy and Dharavath Mahesh — who lost their lives while on duty.
