HYDERABAD: Telangana will administer albendazole tablets to 96,81,855 children and adolescents aged one to 19 on National Deworming Day on July 13, followed by a mop-up drive on July 20 for those who miss the round due to illness or absence.

The health department said children enrolled in anganwadis, schools and junior colleges in government and private sectors will receive the medicine under supervision. ASHAs and Anganwadi helpers will mobilise out-of-school children.

Children aged one to two will receive half a 400 mg tablet. Those aged two to three will receive one full tablet crushed between two spoons and given with water. Children aged three to 19 must chew one full tablet before swallowing it.

Teachers or anganwadi workers must supervise administration. The tablet should not be given on an empty stomach and must not be sent home with the student.

The department said deworming helps control anaemia, improves nutritional absorption, supports cognitive development and reduces illness linked to soil-transmitted worms. The campaign will spread awareness about contaminated food and water, poorly washed produce, undercooked food, soil contact, open defecation and faecal-oral transmission.
