Hyderabad: Folk music artist Durshetti Ramaiah, from Karimnagar district in Telangana, has been selected for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) for the year 2024. The prestigious award is given to artists who excel in the field of performing arts.
Ramaiah, a practitioner of traditional folk art Kaddi Tantri Vadyam, was nominated in the Folk and Tribal/Puppet/Mask Making/Instruments Making field, along with 12 other artists from various states in India.
Durishetti Ramaiah belongs to a family of performers of this rare instrument. His father, Ramanujam, taught him this art, which was passed down through generations. His father had received an award from former chief minister Kasu Brahmananda Reddy of the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh. Ramaiah was also presented with awards by the Telangana government in 2017 for keeping this folk tradition alive.
In a press release, the academy said that the honors not only symbolize the highest standard of excellence and achievement but also recognize sustained individual work and contribution. Eminent artists will be conferred with a purse money of Rs. 1,00,000, besides a Tamrapatra and Angavastram as a token of appreciation, the academy added. The Sangeet Natak Akademi awards will be conferred by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in a special investiture ceremony soon.
