TELL US: Have you had a foreign qualification recognised in Germany?

German authorities set a personal record with the number of foreign qualifications they recognised last year. We want to know if the process has really gotten easier for the workers going through it now.

For foreign skilled workers who want to take up work in Germany, one of the first serious hurdles can be having your qualifications from back home or abroad recognised here.

People who work in so-called “regulated professions” such as doctors, nurses, teachers, lawyers and electricians, just to name a few are strictly required to have certain qualifications in order to work in the Bundesrepublik.

And while we can all probably agree that makes sense, this requirement can create a notoriously challenging barrier to entry for foreigners, who may be well-qualified and experienced in their professions but lack the specific kind of qualification that Germany recognises.

The good news is that Germany is striving to make the process of having foreign qualifications recognised easier. And it might actually be working. National statistics show that a record number of applications to have qualifications recognised were were approved last year.

That said, a record number of approvals does not necessarily mean that most of the people affected are being taken care of, or that the process is efficient.

So we’d like to hear from anyone who has (successfully or not) tried to have their qualifications recognised in Germany:

Did it work out? Are you happy and working in the job you came here to do? Or have you been left waiting, or confronted by other challenges?

Are there specific issues that make having certain qualifications recognised practically impossible?

Please take a moment to fill out our brief survey below. We, and other readers who may be in a similar position, appreciate any insights you can share.
