Terry McLaurin’s season has been cut short.
The Commanders wideout tore his patellar tendon and is out for the rest of the season, coach Dan Quinn announced Tuesday.
“I had a chance to speak to him last night on the plane, and again after testing today,” Quinn said. “I’m gutted for him.”
McLaurin endured the injury while running a route during the Commanders’ 23-17 loss to the 49ers on “Monday Night Football” at Levi’s Stadium. Near the end of the first quarter, the 31-year-old collapsed near the sideline after his left knee gave out and buckled as he planted his foot.
McLaurin remained on the ground for a while before a cart came out to take him off the field. He jumped into the back of the vehicle under his own power as his left leg was put in a full air cast.
The two-time Pro Bowler later underwent an MRI exam and he will now have season-ending surgery.
“Man, he brings a lot on and off the field,” Quinn said. “It’s a big hit, and we’ll lean on a number of guys.”
He finished the game with one catch for 27 yards. McLaurin also wraps up the season as the Commanders’ current leading receiver with 230 yards and one touchdown on 15 receptions.
The Ohio State product has played each of his eight NFL seasons in Washington after being selected in the third round of the 2019 draft by the team.

McLaurin’s prime years with the franchise were from 2020-24 when he put up at least 1,000 yards per season. In 2024, he had 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns.
The injury is a tough one for the Commanders to swallow, as they now sit 1-4-1 and last place in the NFC East after Monday’s loss in Santa Clara.
Yet, the division remains wide open as no team has won a game in the past two weeks — and two of them played each other as Washington tied the Giants.
The Eagles (2-4) lost quarterback Jalen Hurts for the season on Monday due to various blood clots in his lungs. The Cowboys (2-4) lost a second consecutive game on Sunday while the Giants (3-2-1) fell short against the Saints with J.J. McCarthy trying to lead a late rally.
The Commanders head into a Week 7 bye week before hosting the Eagles in Week 8.
