With food prices still going up, the hack could help you save valuable cash

Tesco shoppers are being told to keep their eyes peeled for a six-digit code that ‘will’ save them money. The tip applies to Clubcard shoppers and gives them the chance to stock up on items that are currently on offer.

Jordon Cox, also known as Coupon Kid UK, explained that shoppers should keep their eyes peeled for a small six-digit code on the price tag for items with a separate Clubcard price. In the example Jordan used, it was to the left of the price and in small font.

That six-digit code in Jordan’s example was ‘261020’. Jordan explained that 26 marked the year and 10 was the month, with 20 representing the day. Put together, it marks the date at which the Clubcard price on display ends.

Armed with this knowledge, he said that shoppers could see when the offer comes to an end and can fill their boots before the item becomes more expensive due to the Clubcard price no longer applying.

“There’s a secret code in Tesco that will save you money,” he explained. “On an item with a Clubcard price, look for this: the last two digits are the day, the middle two are the month, and the first two are the year when the deal expires. So, you’ll now know when to stock up before the price goes up.”

The advice comes at a useful time for shoppers, with grocery price inflation still eating into household budgets. Supermarket prices are 2.5% higher than last year, up from 2.3% last month, data from Worldpanel by Numerator shows.

Interestingly, spending on special offers was up significantly, showing that Brits are keeping their eyes peeled for a bargain and going for it when they see it. Spending on promotions over the last month was up by more than a quarter of a billion pounds compared with last year – with special offers remaining a key tool for shoppers looking to keep their grocery bills in check, or to make pricier items and larger packs more affordable, Worldpanel said.

Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, said: “With the autumn Budget fast approaching, the cost of living continues to weigh heavily on the minds of shoppers. And the cost of filling up a car is only adding to the pressure on household budgets.

“More than half tell us they’re very or extremely worried about petrol prices, and almost one in three say it’s already taking a real toll on their finances.

“Until the Chancellor sets out his plans, we expect that caution to carry on showing up at the till, with shoppers leaning more heavily on promotions to keep their grocery spend under control.”

However, in some good news for households preparing for Halloween, like-for-like chocolate confectionery prices are 3% lower than a year ago.
